The Department of Population Science at Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University, Bangladesh, started functioning in 2017 under the Faculty of Social Science. It began with three faculty members and an initial enrollment of sixty-three students in the B.S.S. (Honours) program for the 2016–17 academic year. In subsequent years, student enrollment was standardized at fifty students per academic session. The M.S.S. program was launched in 2020–21. The department offers its curriculum in English and provides thirty-two courses at the B.S.S. (Honours) level and eleven courses, including thesis/monograph, at the M.S.S. level, covering areas such as Demography, Statistics, Mathematics, Economics, Computer Applications, Population Health, and Environmental Studies.

Contemporary Population Issues, Sustainable Development, and Future Challenges: Bangladesh Perspectives
The Department of Population Science, Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University, successfully organized a seminar titled "Contemporary Population Issues, Sustainable Development, and Future Challenges: Bangladesh Perspectives" on 25 July 2026.The seminar was chaired by Dr. K. M. Mustafizur Rahman, Head of the Department of Population Science. The Chief Discussant of the seminar was H.E. Prof. Dr. Rashed Al Mahmud Titumir, Advisor to the Honorable Prime Minister of the People's Republic of Bangladesh. In his keynote discussion, he emphasized the importance of addressing contemporary population challenges through evidence-based policymaking, sustainable development strategies, and effective governance. He highlighted the need to strengthen human capital, improve demographic planning, and enhance research-based policy interventions to achieve long-term national development goals.The seminar was further enriched by the presence of Professor Dr. Mohammad Musharof Hossain, Honourable Vice Chancellor; Professor Dr. Md. Bakhtiar Uddin, Dean, Faculty of Social Science; and Khondokar Nazmul Hasan, Registrar (In-Charge), who participated as Special Discussants.The seminar was attended by all faculty members and students of the Department of Population Science, along with teachers from other departments of the University. An interactive discussion session followed the keynote presentation, during which participants exchanged views on current population dynamics, demographic transition, employment, urbanization, ageing, climate change, and the future development challenges of Bangladesh.The Chair concluded the seminar by expressing sincere gratitude to the Chief Discussant, Special Discussants, distinguished guests, faculty members, students, and all participants for their valuable presence and contributions. He also thanked the organizing committee for successfully arranging the seminar and expressed hope that such academic events would continue to strengthen research, collaboration, and policy dialogue in the field of population science.
Rally on World Population Day 2026
The Department of Population Science, Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University, organized a colorful rally to commemorate World Population Day 2026. The event was graced by the Honourable Vice-Chancellor, Deans from various faculties, and all faculty members of the Department of Population Science, whose enthusiastic participation made the rally a great success. On behalf of the department, Dr. K. M. Mustafizur Rahman, Head of the Department, expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the Honourable Vice-Chancellor, the Deans, and all participants for their valuable presence and support in making the event a memorable one.
Workshop on : Research Methods in Population Science
A workshop titled “Research Methods in Population Science” was held on 06 November 2025 to enhance participants’ understanding of scientific research approaches. The session was conducted by Dr. Md. Mosfequr Rahman, Professor of Population Science and HRD at Rajshahi University. He discussed both quantitative and qualitative research designs commonly used in population studies. The workshop emphasized practical aspects of data collection, analysis, and ethical considerations. Overall, the program was highly informative and strengthened participants’ research capacity in population science.
Population Growth: Challenges and Opportunities
A seminar titled “Population Growth: Challenges and Opportunities” was held on 05/11/2025. The keynote speaker was Dr. Md. Nuruzzaman Haque, Professor of Population Science and HRD at Rajshahi University. He highlighted the multidimensional challenges of rapid population growth, including pressure on resources, health, and employment. At the same time, the seminar emphasized potential opportunities such as demographic dividend through proper planning and human capital development. The session concluded with an interactive discussion, enriching participants’ understanding of population dynamics and development.
