ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
Department of Sociology
is a well-known discipline at Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University.
Sociology started its journey in 2018 in this university though the
university was established in 2006. It covers multi-disciplinary areas of
academic excellence. The Department of Sociology offers a four-year Bachelor
of Social Science (BSS) in Sociology and a one-year Master of Social Science
(MSS) in Sociology. Currently, this department is running the BSS program and the MSS program. The Department of Sociology offers
students theoretical knowledge and empirical research activities during the
entire graduate program. It helps
students to think analytically about our society, community, social structure,
social institutions, social organizations, and other multi-disciplinary areas. The
Department of Sociology, particularly, focuses on a few major areas of sociology
such as Social History, Introduction to Anthropology, Social Psychology, Rural
Sociology, Gender and Society, Family, Marriage and Kinship, Social Inequality,
Social Structure of Bangladesh, Social Problems of Bangladesh, Classical and
Contemporary Sociological Theories, Urban Sociology, Sociology of Environment,
Research Methodology, Globalization, Ethnic Minority, Monograph Design, Industrial Sociology, Advanced Research Methods, Human Rights, Social Change: From Modernity to Post-Modernity, Social Gerontology, Social Policy, and several
sociological issues. The Department of Sociology offers students the
opportunity not only to explore the processes that are sapping current trends but also to develop an understanding of the complexity and diversity of human
societies. The study of sociology stimulates awareness of contemporary
socio-political and cultural issues as well as focuses attention on the
importance of examining and analyzing these issues.
The Department of
Sociology has five batches and six young faculty members who are well dedicated and
enthusiastic to establish this department as an academic excellence. They are
involved in multi-disciplinary academic tasks like research, seminars,
conferences, and other social activities to enrich themselves which also impact the quality of the department. Though there are lots of limitations of this
department to reach the complete academic discipline, it has a seminar
library with around 350 books and a computer lab with 10 computers. It needs
more facilities, faculties, and staff to nurture the department in a good
manner. Nonetheless, the Department of Sociology expects to build a peaceful
environment for the students who will serve the nation in the future.
VISION
The vision of the
Department of Sociology is to be a centre for academic excellence by
producing skilled, meritorious, and competitive future generations in the field
of Sociology. We hope to allure more of the best and brightest students as we
prepare them for their future careers and lives as inlaid citizens. The
Department of Sociology will strive to maintain a sound and inclusive
environment where faculty, staff, and students are to be respected and where
their contributions are fairly recognized.
MISSION
The mission of the
Department of Sociology is to create a potential platform for the students who
will get the opportunities to make themselves fit for the competition in an advanced and modern world. It aims to promote scientific understanding among
the students about social life, culture, and socialization through teaching, research,
scholarship, and so on. It also sets a vision to make the students think
critically and scientifically. Department of Sociology inspires and supports
scholarly research and glorious deeds by its faculty, as well as the
development of sociological knowledge and its application to important social
issues. Through a variety of co-curricular activities at the local, regional, and national levels, we model for our students and others the importance of responsible
community engagement.
